Things that I’ve made, cooked, dressed up as, or am planning to create

It’s 2000Trees festival this weekend, and I am very much looking forward to it.  In fact, I am quite over-excited (I have the urge to do a little booty-dance-style jig every time I think about it).

I’ll probably be blogging about the experience once I have returned and scrubbed off the worst of the festival grunge, but this year I’d also like to share with you a little video about robots.

“And how is this in any way related to being excited about 2000Trees?”, I hear you cry!

Well, every year at Trees there is a fancy dress theme and this year it is Ninjas! vs Robots! vs Cowboys!* So, naturally, we’ve gone for robots.

What? Robots are cool.**

Well, ok – ninjas are cool too, so the clincher was that hubby and I really like The Flight of The Conchords, and they made this really awesome video which is the inspiration for our costumes.

We’ll actually be building our robots tomorrow as we’ve both booked time off work – so I’ll post pics of the results (and maybe even the building of them, if anyone’s interested) either tomorrow or after the festival. I just wish I’d had time to learn the song on guitar, because that would be great… maybe I’ll have a crack at it tonight, but most likely won’t have time.

Oh, and yes, if you were wondering – I will be wearing a stick on beard so I can be Bret.

*Extra exclamation marks are definitely required in that sentence, I don’t care what you finickety-grammar types say…

**If you didn’t read that sentence in a Matt Smith style Dr Who voice then shame on you.

Something for the Weekend: Dinosaur Cupcakes (or Muffins..?)

This Something for the Weekend post is slightly late, seeing as it is now Tuesday. Sorry about that – busy weekend…

*coughs awkwardly & pauses – some-one in the background shouts “get on with it!”*

I don’t usually post about food, but I’ve been getting very into baking cute things lately and so was inspired to share with you my latest creation. I made these as a birthday treat for my friend Gwendbob, and as a little something for another friend of mine. Hope you enjoyed!

Credit where credit is due, the idea for dinosaur cakes originally came from this image (although if I’m honest mine didn’t turn out so professional!):

Dinosaur Cupcakes

Dinosaur Cupcakes from Happy Cakes (Little Cakes for Your Happy!)

But anyway, I made up a batch of double chocolate muffin mix (the recipe I used can be found in Muffins Galore by Catherine Atkinson), and set them aside to cool before decorating them.

While the muffins were cooling, I added orange food colouring to ready-roll white icing and mixed and kneaded it until the colour was uniform and rolled it out until it was around 1/4″ thick. Hubby drew out some dinosaur shapes on some grease proof paper, we cut them out, then used the paper as templates to cut out the dinos from the rolled out icing. Hubby then got creative with the icing pens and decorated each dino with a pretty pattern (I think my favourite was bio-dome dinosaur – he looked like a greenhouse with eyes!).

I covered the muffins with vanilla butter-cream icing using a pallet knife, and rolled the edges in multi-coloured sprinkles to give that extra bit of prettiness that only sprinkles can provide. The it was just a question of placing dino on prepared cupcake and serving. Om nom nom!

News Flash: Zombies March on Bristol!

This weekend was Hallowe’en, which of course the majority of you knew already. What a lot of people wouldn’t know was that this weekend was also the 4th Bristol Zombie Walk!

I vaguely heard about this after last year’s event, and thought ‘oh that sounds fun’ and then promptly forgot about it until about a fortnight ago, when one of my friends posted the info about this year’s walk on Facebook. So, seeing as we were heading into Bristol last weekend to see some friends anyway, we thought we’d give it a go!

Before we went, I did a bit of looking round the interwebs to find out how to make cool zombie wounds and stuff, so if you’re curious, take a look at these articles (although there were loads of amazing costumes, many of them a lot more professional looking than ours!)

I was pretty proud of how we looked on the day – especially considering that by the time we got back from having lunch we only had around 45 minutes to pull everything together… a bit of a rush, but fun anyway!

Personally, I think may favourite part of the day was taking the bus into town and seeing little groups of zombies on the way…well, that and the copious amounts of cider we drank after we left the main group and made our way to the Apple…

This is our video diary of the day – recorded and edited by Jon Ponting. Enjoy!
