I love the winter because winter is great

I suspect that may be a slightly controversial statement, because judging from the news/the usual office gossip/generally talking to people, I’ve come to the conclusions that everyone hates winter.

But why? Yes, it’s cold and it gets dark early, but really – is that enough to hate an entire season?

I love the winter in England. This year in particular has been brilliant because of the snow, which has been making the whole place look like a picture book winter wonderland. But even in wet, dreary winters (which, I will admit, can be unpleasant) there is still the joy of splashing in puddles, then coming in from the cold to drink freshly made hot chocolate while the warmth slowly seeps back into your fingers.

And then there are the sunsets. Winter sunsets are something special to me. The sky looks so washed out, the bare trees so black and forlorn, and yet the sun brings a particular pale orange tint that deepens as the sun sinks over the horizon. Beautiful and totally awe inspiring.

So there you have it, despite the cold and wet, winter has its beauty. And the cold is a perfect excuse for cuddling up and keeping warm – and that’s always fun!
